Three Easy Care Houseplants

There’s something about the way a real live plant brings life to a room.  Whenever I’m decorating a space and it just feels a little flat, I know that adding a plant in a pretty pot or basket will always do the trick!  But isn’t it so disappointing when you fall in love with a plant, maybe even give her a name, and then you notice a few weeks later that she’s looking a little pale?  Her leaves are withering and droopy.  She’s crying out for help, but you have no idea what to do to save her!   I’ve definitely killed my fair share of houseplants, but here are a few that have been thriving in my house for the last few months and still look happy and healthy!

This little girl’s name is Zamioculcas Zamifolia.  We call her ZZ for obvious reasons.  She has beautiful, glossy, dark green leaves and has a cool tropical vibe.  I place five ice cubes around the base of the plant once a week and she has no complaints!  Watering indoor plants with ice cubes is helpful because as they melt they act as a drip system so you don’t have a lot of water running through your pot all at once.

Meet Sissy, the Snake plant (or Sansevieria).  She likes to be near the window and I also give her about five ice cubes a week.  I recently repotted her into this basket with some sandy soil (especially for cactus and succulents), and divided off two small shoots to place in other rooms in the house and she doesn’t even know what’s missing.  I especially love her because she acts as a natural air filter!

Lastly, you can’t go wrong with succulents.  They need sandy soil that doesn’t hold onto to moisture too much as well, and I give them each two ice cubes a week and sometimes I place them on the window sill so they can soak up the morning light that comes in.  No name for them yet, but a word of advise – do name your plants!  You are much less likely to neglect something with a name!

All of these plants came from my local Home Depot.  Keep your receipts and if your plant does not thrive despite your earnest ambitions they will refund or replace your plant.  Let me know if you have a favorite houseplant I should bring home!
